OVERVIEW

The small Genus Cardiocrinum consists of only three species which in former times have been classified as Lilium - they are also very closely related - See also teh following phylogenetic tree which is discussed under "SYSTEMATICS 2".

Die kleine Gattung Cardiocrinum besteht aus nur drei Arten, die früher zur Gattung Lilium gezählt wurden, beide sind auch nahe verwandt - siehe auch den phylogenetische Stammbaum, der unter "SYSTEMATICS 2" diskutiert wird.

The most important feature that distinguishes Cardiocrinum from Lilium is that the bulb is able to produce only one flower stem and then dies, leaving some doughter bulbs that will produce flowers in the following years. 

Das wichtigste Merkmal, das Cardiocrinum von Lilium unterscheidet, ist die Tatsache, dass die Zwiebel ein einziges Mal blüht, danach abstirbt und Tochterzwiebeln hinterlässt, die in den folgenden Jahren für die Blüte sorgen. 

DESCRIPTION

From rather large winged seeds a plant is formed with a large bulb composed of thick dark colored scales. From this a rosette of large heart shaped leaves with a gloosy surface arises for up to 10 years giving the plant the look of a large Hosta. 

BESCHREIBUNG

Aus grossen geflügelten Samene entwickeln sich Pflanzen mit einer grossen Zwiebel, die aus dicken dunkel gefärbten Schuppen besteht. Aus dieser bildet sich bis zu 10 Jahre lang eine Rosette von herzförmigen Blättern mit glänzender Oberfläche, ähnlich einer riesigen Hosta. 

After 5 to 10 years, a single thick flower stem is formed, between 100 and 300 cm tall (depending on species) with as many as 20 large, white, scented, trumped shaped flowers, mostly with reddish stripes towards the base of the tepals.

Nach 5 bis 10 jahren schliesslichen erhebt sich ein einzelner Stängel 100 bis 300 cm hoch (je nach Art) mit bis zu 20 grossen, weissen, duftenden, trompetenförmigen Blüten, meist mit rötlichen Streifen an der Basis der Tepalen. 

After flowering and forming capsules, the main plant dies down, but under good conditions it will have produced doughter bulbs that will flower in the following years. by this growing habit, a large group of gigantic lilies may form throughout the years. 

Nach der Blüte und Samenbildung stirbt die Mutterpflanze, hat aber, gute Bedingungen vorausgesetzt, Tochterzwiebeln gebildet, die im Lauf der folgenden Jahre blühen. So entwickelt sich im Lauf der Jahre u. U. ein schöner Bestand an gigantischen Lilien.
