DESCRIPTION

BULB: globose, 2-4.5 cm in diameter; scales white, lanceolate, 18-40 x 8-14 mm.

BESCHREIBUNG

Zwiebel: rundlich, 2-4.5 cm im Durchmesser; Schuppen weiss, lanzettlich, 18-40 x 8-14 mm.

STEM: 65-200 cm, smooth or papillous.

Stängel: 65-200 cm, glatt oder papillös.

LEAVES: scattered, obovate, lanceolate, or linear, 7-15 x 0.6-2 mm, 5-7-veined.

Blätter: verteilt, spatelförmig, lanzettlich oder linear, 7-15 x 0.6-2 cm, 5-7-nervig.

FLOWERS: solitary or several in a subumbel, not fragrant. Petals form a funnel with recurved tips, white, purplish suffused, unspotted; outer ones oblong-oblanceolate, 13-18 x 2-4.5 cm; inner ones spatulate, 3.5-5 cm wide; nectaries papillous on both surfaces. Stamens curved upward; filaments 10-13 cm, densely pilous to glabrous. Style 8.5-11 cm. Capsule 4.5-6 x ~3.5 cm. Seeds immediate hypogeal germination. Flowering time June-August. 2n=24.

Blüten: einzeln oder mehrere in einer Dolde, nicht duftend. Petalen formen einen Trichter mit zurückgebogenen Spitzen, weiss, purpurn überhaucht, ohne Punkte; äussere spatelig bis lanzettlich, 13-18 x 2-4.5 cm; innere spatelförmig, 3.5-5 cm breit; Nektarien papillös auf beiden Seiten. Stamina aufwärts gebogen; Filamente 10-13 cm, dicht drüsig bis klebrig. Stylum 8.5-11 cm. Kapsel 4.5-6 x ~3.5 cm. Samen sofortige unterirdische Keimung. Blütezeit Juni-August. 2n=24.

ORIGIN: China, grassy slopes and forests, along streams, wastelands around villages.

Herkunft: China, grasige Hänge und Wälder, entlang von Flüssen, Ödland um Dörfer.

PECULIARITIES: Species not totally hardy and rather seldom in cultivation in Western countries. Plant is cultivated in China for its large edible bulbs.

BESONDERHEITEN: Die Art ist nicht gänzlich winterhart und im Westen recht selten in Kultur. In China vor allem wegen der essbaren Zwiebeln kultiviert.

CULTURE NOTES: In principle rather adaptable to many types of soil, but, unfortunately, not totally hardy.

KULTURHINWEISE: Prinzipiell recht anpassungsfähig an verschiedene Bodentypen, leider aber nicht sehr winterhart.

Lilium brownii var. brownii F. E. Br. ex Miellez 1841: Leaves lanceolate to linear, flowers in the lower range of mentioned dimensions / Blätter lanzettlich bis linear; Blüten im unteren Bereich der angegebenen Dimensionen.

var. australe Stapf 1921: Bulbs narrow, white; leaves narrowly lanceolate; due to its origin mainly around Hong Kong more or less perennial lify cycle. / Zwieblen schmal, weiss; Blätter schmal-lanzettlich, Aufgrund der Herkunft hauptsächlich um Hong Kong praktisch immergrünes Wuchsverhalten.

var. viridulum Baker 1885 (syn. var. colchesteri Wilson 1932): Leaves rather obovate, flowers larger and stronger than of other varieties / Blätter eher spatelförmig, Blüten kräftiger gebaut und grösser als bei den anderen Varietäten.
